Old tradition of January 7th, which I am looking forward to.

Hello,everyone!
and...
Happy new year!!
How was your new year's day?
I was soooo busy for cleaning my house...hehe

Anyway,
today's post is the first blog of this year
and at the same time,
it will be the last post for the food blog of Rochell's class...><

The last topic is about...
"Seven-herb rice porridge (七草粥)"!!
Tomorrow is the day of eating this rice porridge^^
It is one of the Japanese traditional habit
and people eat it in the evening of the January 7th
with hoping for the health.
Another reason why people eat it is that
to have our tired stomach rest
because of the too much eating and drinking
in the New year's day.

Basically,
there are seven herbs,
1)seri(cicely) 2)nazuna(shepherd's-purse)
3)gogyo 4)hakobera(chickweed)
5)hotokenoza(henbit) 6)suzuna 7)suzushiro,
in the seven-herb rice porridge.
Sometimes there are some a little diferences depending on the area,
but I have never eaten another type of this rice porridge.

Every this season,
stores start to sell a set of this herbs.

Herbs are dried so it is easy to make rice porridge,
just put them into the rice!
Seasoning is only the salt.
It is enough to eat it^^

I have heard that
less people eat this rice porridge on the January 7th.
It means this tradition is starting to disappear little by little, I guess.
That is so sad thing
because this tradition has been lasting since today,
but it might not be exist in the farther future.
I hope this old habit will be last for ever
and I heartily think
those old tradition should be protected by new generation.
There are some people who don't know
what is the seven herbs of this rice porridge
like me who was in a couple hours ago.

In my case,
I am a one who is looking forward to eating seven-rice porridge^^
I will protect this tradition!!

Anyway,
I am so happy to be able to write this kind of blog
because I have never done this before.
It was interesting study and experience for me.

I am so happy if everyone can enjoy my blog.

Then,
have a happy january 7th,
and please spend a wonderful and meaningful 2012!!

  1. Actually, I forgot eating seven-herb rice porridge this year. I wanna try not to forget to eat it from next year.
I also think Japanese tradition is disappearing little by little recently. We should continue Japanese tradition not to lose it.

I didn't know how to make it and how taste it has. In addition, I didn't care why do Japanese people eat the porridge.I found the meaning which the traditional habit has. I will try the food:)

  3. I am the one of the people who do not eat 7 herbs on January 7th. I didn't know this tradition because my parents didn't tell me. If you tell your future children and continue this habit, it will not disappear. Next year, I will try;) I have the stomach disease now so it might because I didn't rest my stomach by eating herbs.lol
